For those who are looking to register for gifts for the first time there are a number of questions that may arise. Is it the right thing to do? Do the guest love or hate buying from a registry? Does it make buying a gift less personal? Do you have to stick to a certain price range? And the list goes on.

Is It A Good Idea?

These days bridal and gift registry is so common that most people even expect it. It makes choosing a gift much easier for the guests, and ensures that you get things that you really will use and value without having to return gifts you don't want and then buy those you do for yourself. Also, anyone who doesn't like the idea is welcome to purchase off the register or from a different store, so there's nothing to lose.

Choosing Stores

First of all, when choosing a store for your bridal and gift registry, don't choose a store to suit what you think your guests expect. If you want to register at a discount store, but fear your guests expect you to go with an expensive department store (or vice versa), don't do it just to please them. Register at a store you like. You are not trying to make a big statement.

One thing to keep in mind is that it is a good idea to choose a store that is convenient to most of your guests or at least has the option of online purchase and delivery of gifts for out-of-towners.

It is acceptable to register for two or more stores if you like, though four should be your limit.

What to Register For

Of course everyone can come up with a huge wish list of everything they want for their wedding or baby shower or whatever the event is. It's not a good idea to go crazy with the scanner and register for everything you see. Usually an in-store consultant can help give you some guidelines to set you on the right track.

Don't worry about registering for some things that are more expensive. This type of item makes a great group gift from the gang at work or another group of friends who want to go in for something large. Rest assured that your guests won't feel that they have to buy you something outside of their budget.

Still, make sure that you register for things in all price ranges. This way everyone will find something they are comfortable and happy getting for you.

Creating your bridal and gift registry is one of the exciting parts of preparing for a new life with your spouse-to-be. Don't get too stressed or worry too much about what your guests might think. Using a little consideration for your guests as you make decisions that are really mostly for yourself is all you really need to do.
